gold
Gold had gotten it's English name from the Germanic word gulþa. Although not pronounced in English as it is in Germanic, the word has derived from that origin. Many different languages however, have different origin words. The old English word used for gold was geolu which means yellow. Many of you at this point may be very confused. If you know that the periodic symbol for gold is 'au', you're probably wondering how it got it's symbol. The symbol, actually derives from another word, which was the Latin word aurum, which meant gold, and the latin word aureus meant golden. Gold was first discovered, many millions of years ago. It was found in it's natural state, in streams all around the world. Man y say that there is no doubt that this was the first metal known to hominids. There was no way that people intentionally went looking for such an unknown substance such as gold, many millions of years ago. Which is why it is believed that gold was found in its natural state, by hominids.
Chemical Properties of Gold
Gold has been a valued metal, by mankind for countless years, with records of this precious metal dating back thousands of years ago. WE know that this metal, was used in the ancient civilisations, of the: Egypt, Asia minor and Greece. Many countries saw the practicalities of gold. The Egyptians had used gold to create jewellery for their leaders, and pharaohs. We saw this when tutankhamen's tomb was discovered by Howard Carter, in 1922. There has been much evidence of the Greeks using gold to help with every day concepts, such as using it to make money (coins of troy), taking advantage of it malleability. Although the Minoans had been known to make small jewellery that usually included gold or silver. The main difference, between the Minoans however was that these could be sold to anybody. These can still be seen in museums across the world today (mainly in Greece). Just like the ancient Greek and Egyptian's, many people use gold for jewellery, which is now measured in carrots. Gold can also be made into very fine layers, and for a very expensive price, can be eaten. This is sometimes used to decorate foods, although costs a lot of money. Gold has no taste. Many only eat gold to say they have experienced it, but not for the taste. It can also be used in many other different ways, which is why gold is such a coveted metal. Gold is an amazing conductor of electricity due to the fact that it's a yellow metal, this also means that it does not tarnish. There are old books, suggesting that gold has been used in dentistry for over 3000 years, and is still used today to fill rotten teeth holes, and holes caused by cavities. gold is also used in motherboards for computers, as it is a very good conductor of electricity. Gold can also be used in architecture, but not as frequently as it was previously, as it costs too much money.gold is also used on spacecrafts, to help not over heat core temperature, and also to protect the infrared technology on board the spacecraft.
